The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
