Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
